The Name Game

Last night my girlfriend and me went out for a couple of drinks. It was nice, we had ginger beer.

On the way home we were approached by a group of four men. I never particularly like being approached by four men at night time, especially not these men, because they were drunk.

The leader of the pack walked straight up to me, grabbed my hand and said ‘Dave! How have you been Dave, haven’t seen you in ages Dave.’

My name isn’t Dave, and I think he knew that. I think he was playing some sort of game. A game where he goes around undermiming people. A game where he tries to make people look like fools.

I replied ‘Oh not too bad Keith.’

This wasn’t what he was expecting. He was hoping I’d fall in his trap. That I would become flustered and say ‘but my name isn’t Dave?’

I saw the rebellious glint in his eye fade away as he realized he had been outmanoeuvred by a pro. He thought he would walk away from this on top. That he would leave this conversation as a champion to his friends, because he is the one who dared. The one who dared undermine the guy who was walking home with his girlfriend, however he didn’t see this coming. Not at all. He let go of my hand, walked off and said ‘My name is Keith an ‘all…’

Game Changers

You sometimes happen upon them. They make you think twice about why you do something the way you do. They make you work harder. They make you try harder. They make you up your game. They leave you in awe. Some of them leave the whole world in awe. They often have their own standards. Some of them ridiculous, some of them off kilter, but all of them logical. They always live by their own standards, and I’d be willing to bet a lot of them would die for them too.

These people are the game-changers. They make you change your game plan, most of the time they don’t even realize it. They lead by example, however they do so accidentally. They’re intentions are to live how they see fit. Not how you see fit. But that’s why we love them. They can be extremely irritating too, and arrogant or smug, but always fair. You don’t meet many of them though, so when you do you better take note.

Unfortunately we lost one of the best of them recently, Steve Jobs. Without Steve Jobs the game would have been very much different.

It would have been more boxy… and we definitely wouldn’t have Garageband.

RIP CD’s and RIP Steve Jobs.
